Description:
Congressman Jimmy Gomez seeks a Press Secretary to join his fast-paced four-person communications team.
Responsibilities:
Lead traditional press operations for the Member, serving as the primary point of contact for local, national, and political media outlets. Develop and execute earned media strategies tied to legislative priorities, oversight efforts, district initiatives, bill rollouts, and major national news moments. Draft press releases, statements, non-committee speeches, talking points, quotes, media advisories, op-eds, and interview materials in the Member's voice and style. Manage rapid response communications, including monitoring breaking news, identifying opportunities and risks, and developing timely messaging strategies. Build and maintain strong working relationships with reporters, producers, editors, bookers, and national media contacts. Pitch stories, coordinate interviews, and secure media coverage across television, print, digital, radio, and new media platforms. Plan and execute press conferences, media availabilities, and other public-facing communications moments. Prepare the Member for interviews, press conferences, and public appearances through briefing materials and message guidance. Collaborate closely with digital and video staff to ensure message consistency across platforms and maximize reach of earned media moments. Track media coverage, identify narrative trends, and brief senior staff and the Member on communications developments throughout the day.
Qualifications:
Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to draft quickly, clearly, and strategically under pressure. Experience in political communications, public affairs, journalism, campaigns, government, or related fields. Demonstrated understanding of national politics, congressional operations, and the modern media environment. Ability to manage multiple priorities and shifting deadlines in a fast-paced setting. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with reporters, stakeholders, and internal teams. Excellent judgment, political instincts, and attention to detail. Familiarity with broadcast booking, media monitoring, social media trends, and rapid response strategy. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as news developments require.
