Description:
The Office of Congressman Josh Gottheimer seeks a motivated Legislative Assistant / Policy Advisor to advance his legislative priorities on the House Financial Services Committee and across a broader policy portfolio.
Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities • Work with the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff to formulate and advance legislative initiatives in assigned issue areas. • Manage the Congressman's work on financial services, housing, economic, transportation, and related policy issues as assigned, including: formulating legislative initiatives, devising a legislative plan and drafting it into legislative form; planning, coordinating, and scheduling the introduction of legislation in the House (or offering it on an appropriate vehicle when it is an amendment); gathering support from other Members and relevant interest groups; working with committees; and coordinating the legislative support needed to pass the bill in the House. • Identify and pursue legislative opportunities for the Congressman, including leading and cosponsoring bills and drafting and cosigning letters within the assigned portfolio. • Brief the Member on bills before the House and advise on committee activity, including by preparing memos, question lines, and draft remarks ahead of committee hearings and mark-ups. • Track legislation and coordinate cosponsorship of bills within the portfolio. • Monitor House floor and committee activity to recommend votes and legislative action within the portfolio. • Provide regular verbal and written reports to the Legislative Director on legislative work and priorities. • Represent the Member at meetings with constituents and interest groups. • Draft and edit constituent correspondence, oversight letters, op-eds, talking points, legislation, and other written material related to the portfolio. • Coordinate with the Chief of Staff and District Director to amplify legislative work locally, and assist district staff with legislative matters affecting the local community. • Provide district office staff with targeted information for community events and Town Hall meetings. • Provide input to help the Communications Director draft speeches, press releases, op-eds, and Congressional Record statements for the Member. • Support district staff in writing speeches and memos for events the Congressman attends.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have substantial experience across a range of issues, including banking and financial services, housing, and economic policy. Strong academic credentials, committee experience, and a proven record of leading policy from inception to enactment are required. • Highly qualified candidates will possess strong strategic thinking, planning, and execution skills, along with the ability to work well under pressure, extensive knowledge of the legislative process, and availability to work long hours. • A law degree and/or prior experience as policy staff is a plus. • Interest and/or experience in energy or defense policy is a plus.
