Description:
The Legislative Assistant (LA) serves as the Congresswoman's primary staffer managing the Congresswoman's work on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Congresswoman's health, disability, and biotechnology portfolio (additional policy areas will be assigned as well).
Responsibilities:
Collaborates with the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff to formulate and advance legislation initiatives for assigned issue areas. Plans, coordinates, and schedules the introduction of legislation in the House and/or offering it on an appropriate legislative vehicle, including as an amendment. Considers and addresses differing perspectives and opinions to navigate policy conflicts and develops effective solutions. Tracks legislation and other developments in assigned issue areas to brief the Congresswoman and to prepare her for votes on the House Floor, committee work, work in the district and other House-related activities. Tracks policy developments in their assigned portfolio to identify opportunities to build the Congresswoman's leadership on priority issue areas. Works with LD to track relevant legislation through the committee, House floor, Senate, and conference committee processes. Provides information to generate ideas and provides input on press/social media, mass mailings and newsletters when appropriate. Provides district office staff with targeted information to assist preparation for community events and town halls. Provides input to assist the communications team on speeches, press releases, op-eds and Congressional Record statements. Drafts speeches, press releases, op-eds and Congressional Record statements. Works closely with the Legislative Correspondent to draft constituent mail and works with constituents/key stakeholders to assist with federal matters. Acts as a liaison with committees, federal departments and agencies in the issue areas for which you are responsible and to coordinate information regarding specific legislative matters. Provides briefing materials for the Member in advance of committee hearings, markups and meetings. Serves as the Members' representative at meetings with constituents and other interest groups (e.g.: VIPs, private sector executives, government officials). Builds relationships with other congressional offices and stakeholders, including advocacy groups, in order to advance the Congresswoman's priorities.
