Description:
Congresswoman Lateefah Simon seeks a Legislative Director to lead the office's legislative operation and oversee the development and execution of her policy agenda.
Responsibilities:
The Legislative Director plays an essential leadership role in the office by working closely with the Chief of Staff in assisting with the formulation of the Member's policy and legislative strategy. The Legislative Director will also work with the Communications Director to ensure that the Member's legislative strategy is incorporated into the office's communications plans. The Legislative Director is also responsible for overseeing the legislative team, which currently consists of two legislative assistants and one legislative correspondent. The LD will be responsible for overseeing the office's appropriations process, and engaging in community outreach to local stakeholders along with the District Director on the Congresswoman's agenda. This position will also work closely with the District Director and Chief of Staff to ensure community project funding priorities are included and reflected throughout the appropriations process. The LD will also maintain a policy portfolio and is the lead staffer responsible for identifying and advancing legislative opportunities for the Congresswoman, including drafting legislation, amendments and opportunities to speak on the House Floor on the Congresswoman's priorities.
Qualifications:
This position requires long hours, weekends, travel to the district, along with strong leadership and deep knowledge of the legislative process. This is not an entry level position, with a minimum of at least 6 years' experience a legislative staffer. Strong management skills are required as well. East Bay/California ties are a plus.
