Description:
Senator Chris Murphy seeks an experienced, strategic, and high-energy Communications Director (CD) to lead a forward-looking, aggressive, and digital-forward press operation. Serving as a key member of the senior management team, the CD is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive traditional and new media strategies to advance the Senator’s legislative, state, and national priorities. The ideal candidate brings sharp political insight, excellent management skills, and a proven track record of delivering quality work under pressure. In this role, the CD will conceptualize, implement, and manage a proactive national and state media strategy while serving as a strategic advisor to the Senator and senior leadership team. Day-to-day operations include overseeing, mentoring, and fostering the professional growth of a 5-person press team. This is a highly collaborative role that requires partnering closely with the Digital Director to execute creative, nontraditional media strategies alongside legacy press operations. The CD will staff the Senator for interviews and events, manage rapid-response situations, and work hand-in-hand with the chief of staff, legislative, outreach, and constituent services teams. Additionally, the CD will work closely with the Political Director, who manages all operations on the unofficial side, ensuring cohesive communication strategies across both official and political efforts. Significant Capitol Hill communications experience is required, and high-level campaign experience is desirable. Connecticut ties are also a strong plus. Candidates must possess an established network of national and state media contacts, with a proven ability to pitch and place high-profile stories. Exceptional writing, editing, and strategic planning skills are essential, as are a voracious news appetite and a keen eye for detail. The position requires a professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and demonstrates good political judgment. A strong sense of humor, works collaboratively and has a commitment to mentorship are also needed.
