Description:
The Office of Senator Elissa Slotkin is seeking an experienced Speechwriter to serve in the Washington, DC office. The Speechwriter will be responsible for drafting written remarks for Senator Slotkin, including floor speeches, public remarks, questions in Congressional hearings, op-eds, social media and other public statements. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the political communications landscape, policy issues, a talent for plainspoken storytelling, and the ability to capture Senator Slotkin’s voice and vision in written form. This position requires excellent research skills, political acumen, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The Speechwriter will report to the Communications Director.
Responsibilities:
include, but are not limited to: • Drafting and editing speeches, remarks, video scripts, op-eds, social media, talking points, and other communications materials. • Collaborating closely with the Senator, senior staff, the communications team, and legislative team to ensure message consistency. • Conducting in-depth research on policy issues, historical references, and current events to support speechwriting efforts. • Developing and refining key themes and narratives that align with the Senator’s priorities. • Working directly with the Senator and Senior Staff to manage the script and topics for the weekly Intel Briefing video series. • Drafting ceremonial and personal correspondence on behalf of the Senator, including drafting for the office’s constituent notes program. • Tailoring messages for various audiences, to ensure that Senator Slotkin’s public remarks resonate with the people of Michigan. • Contributing to statements for high profile press conferences or media appearances. Qualifications:
Professional experience in speechwriting, preferably for senior officials or government agencies. • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills. • Strong understanding of U.S. politics, legislative processes, and policy issues. • Ability to synthesize complex policy topics into accessible and engaging language. • Experience collaborating with communication and policy teams. • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. • Rigorous attention to detail and outstanding judgment. Location and work environment: This role is in the Washington D.C. office. Candidates should expect a fast paced, results oriented work environment.
