The Office of U.S. Senator Angela D. Alsobrooks is seeking a Communications Director to lead a fast-paced communications operation in Washington, D.C. This individual will serve as the office’s lead messaging strategist, responsible for shaping and executing a disciplined, proactive communications strategy that advances the Senator’s priorities across national and in-state media, both traditional and new. The Communications Director will oversee all aspects of the Senator’s communications operation, including press, digital, and message development. The role requires a strong strategic thinker who is equally comfortable operating at a high level and engaging directly in the day-to-day execution of communications products. This position reports to the Chief of Staff and works closely with the Senator. The starting salary is $150,000 - $160,000.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include: Serving as the lead architect of the Senator’s communications strategy, ensuring message discipline and consistency across all platforms Managing and directing a communications team, including press and digital staff, and overseeing all external-facing content and approvals Developing and executing proactive media strategies that elevate the Senator’s profile in both national and in-state media Building and maintaining strong relationships with reporters, editors, producers, and bookers across print, digital, and broadcast outlets Pitching and securing media opportunities, including interviews, op-eds, and feature coverage Drafting and editing a wide range of materials, including statements, press releases, talking points, speeches, and op-eds Preparing and briefing the Senator for media engagements, public appearances, and major communications moments Managing daily press inquiries and rapid response in a fast-moving news environment Collaborating closely with policy, state, and senior staff to align communications with legislative and political priorities
Qualifications:
Qualifications: 5–8 years of communications experience, preferably on Capitol Hill, in a campaign, or in a senior communications role Demonstrated experience managing staff and leading a communications operation Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling, and accessible content in the Senator’s plainspoken voice A strong network of media contacts and a proven ability to generate earned media Deep understanding of the modern media landscape, including television, print, and digital platforms Strong judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment A proactive, creative, and solutions-oriented approach to communications challenges
